A Glass a Day Keeps the Burglar Away

I’m rehashing a true story that took place a couple of years ago.  A group of friends were finishing a decadent dinner complemented by a beautiful bottle of Bordeaux. Just as things were winding down, the real action started. As if it was written for the screen…a burglar interrupts the party. Yikes!! Immediately the perpetrator demanded money and stated that those who chose the path of non-compliance would be met by bullets.  So how did our frightened guests respond? Since I recently read an article on how wine can make you more intelligent, the following retort makes perfect sense. They  offered the criminal a glass of wine. Not just a glass of wine, but a pour from a bottle a third-growth Bordeaux; Malescot St. Exupery . Malescot, an up-and-coming estate, is from the Margaux region of France. The Margaux region is known for beautiful, seamless, elegant, and floral wines of superior finesse and class. So how did the robber respond to their generous offer? He acquiesced! Not surprisingly, after the first taste he commented, “Damn, that’s a good wine.” The guests offered him the whole bottle to enjoy. He took a bite of cheese and continued to sip. Then he decided put the gun away. Ah, the seduction of Margaux. Are we really surprised? It doesn’t end there. The robber decides it’s time to apologize to the guests, “I think I may have come to the wrong house," "Can I get a hug?" The burglar leaves the scene with a half-full crystal glass in hand. No one hurt, no one harmed. Just a few guests scared sober. Who knew wine could save your life? Though, I’m sure there are easier ways to procure a glass of great Bordeaux.
